The Rat Pack:


Steven (the Lab Rat):

Species: Rattus rattus
Gender: Male
Home: The old lab coat in the chemicals closet
Appearance: Small black rat with lively eyes
Character: Curious and mischievous, but kind. Has a vivid imagination. A bit of a loner.
Special traits: Good climber, doesn't like to swim. Passes his time with strolling around the garden or watching the professor in the lab.

Oscar (the Leader):

Species: Rattus norvegicus
Gender: Male
Home: The never-used fireplace in the living room
Appearance: Large brown rat which coarse fur, powerfully built. The left side of his face is heavily scarred. Only has one eye.
Character: Good leader, but has a flaring temper. Can attack other rats if he's dissatisfied.
Special traits: Leader of the rat pack, rumoured to have won a fight with a cat (hence the scars). Has three sons with Yola.

Yola:

Species: Rattus norvegicus
Gender: Female
Home: The never-used fireplace in the living room.
Appearance: Medium-sized brown rat, very graceful, holds herself proudly
Character: Proud and sure of herself. Compassionate and understanding, willing to help others.
Special traits: Wife to Oscar. Has three sons with him. Much respected in the community. Rats come to her if they have a problem.

Mike:

Species: Rattus norvegicus
Gender: Male
Home: The nest under the porch steps
Appearance: Medium-sized brown rat
Character: Nice to everyone. A good father and generally a family guy.
Special traits: Married to Minka, has five children. Prefers the outdoors to the house.

Minka:

Species: Rattus norvegicus
Gender: Female
Home: The nest under the porch steps
Appearance: Small, pretty, light grey rat with a long glossy tail.
Character: Kind and loving.
Special traits: Married to Mike, she too prefers the outdoors. Has five children.


Pete (the Hamster):

Species: Rattus norvegicus
Gender: Male
Home: The long-forgotten leather suitcase under the bed.
Appearance: Fat brown rat. His right ear was bitten off by an angry Oscar.
Character: Nice guy as long as no one touches his food. A coward, but a jolly one.
Special traits: Scared to death of Oscar. Loves food more than anything, stores it in his nest.

Ivan:

Species: Rattus norvegicus
Gender: Male
Home: Under the book case in the library.
Appearance: Small, light grey youth.
Character: Happy-go-lucky, ready to follow any crazy plan of Alina's.
Special traits: Twin brother of Alina (younger by one minute), always up to no good.

Alina:

Species: Rattus norvegicus
Gender: Female
Home: Under the book case in the library.
Appearance: Small, light grey youth.
Character: Happy-go-lucky, full of mischievous ideas.
Special traits: Twin sister of Ivan (older by one minute), always up to no good.

Lora (The Widow):

Species: Rattus norvegicus
Gender: Female
Home: Under the book case in the library.
Appearance: Old, very small brown rat.
Character: Strict, worries a lot
Special traits: Takes care of Ivan and Alina, tries unsuccessfully to teach them some manners


Others:

Coenraadus van't Hoff (the Professor, the Prof, Coen):

Species: Homo sapiens
Gender: Male
Home: The old house
Appearance: Tall and lanky, short black hair, blue eyes.
Character: Chaotic and absorbed by his research. Lazy in anything but science. Kind, but unhappy and lonely.
Special traits: A Dutch chemist. Very young for a professor. The Nobel prize winner J. van't Hoff was his distant relative so he is always trying to live up to him. Clumsy, curses a lot when he's upset. Loves heavy metal and hard rock.

The Mole

Species: Talpa europaea
Gender: Male
Home: Burrows in the garden
Appearance: No one really knows, because he so rarely comes out into the light.
Character: Grumpy and territorial – or so he appears.
Special traits: Speaks with a thick accent. Old.

Simon (the Cat):

Species: Felis silvestris catus
Gender: Male
Home: The old house
Appearance: Very large smoky grey tomcat with orange eyes.
Character: Unrevealed so far
Special traits: A good mouser

Gender: Female
Home: The room with the many books in Zürich
Appearance: Medium-sized, slightly overfed human with brown hair and eyes.
Character: Chaotic, overly talkative, a bit eccentric, laughs a lot.
Special traits: A chemistry student of the ETH Zürich, has Russian for mother tongue. Loves reading, chemistry, music, photography, writing and eating.
